Feeling feverish and completely beat up? Every bone hurts, as if you were “under the wheels”, your head is pounding and you are plagued by a persistent cough and a runny nose? For such cases, homeopathy has the flu remedy Eupatorium perfoliatum ready.
Eupatorium perfoliatum is the Latin name for the streaky water hemp or water daffodil, a herbaceous plant with small white flowers from the daisy family, which is primarily native to North America. Eupatorium perfoliatum is also popularly known as fever herb, because the plant was already used by the Native Americans to treat feverish infections and is still used in naturopathy today.

Eupatorium perfoliatum: Indian herb against headaches and body aches
In homeopathy, too, Eupatorium perfoliatum is considered a classic for the treatment of influenza infections. The fresh flowers and leaves of the Indian medicinal plant are used to produce the homeopathic mother tincture and the finished solution is then potentized accordingly.
The main areas of application for Eupatorium perfoliatum are severe headaches, body aches and muscle pains that occur in connection with influenza infections. In the foreground is always the feeling of being beaten up with a severe headache that literally hurts every bone and every muscle fiber. Since influenza infections are often caused by viruses and not bacteria, antibiotics do not help in these cases. Nevertheless, the symptoms can often be alleviated by natural substances and the course of the disease can be positively influenced.
Gentle help against respiratory problems
Eupatorium perfoliatum also offers gentle help for respiratory problems with a stubborn, dry and painful cough and watery runny nose. Typically, those affected have to hold their chest when coughing up pain. In addition, patients usually complain of uncomfortable pressure on the eyeballs.
The homeopathic flu remedy is basically suitable for patients of all ages and can be used for supportive treatment in adults and children. However, conventional medical advice should always be obtained for reliable clarification of the symptoms. The doctor can determine whether the infection is viral or bacterial.
Eupatorium perfoliatum 6X and 12X: Typical potencies and their dosage
For the concomitant self-treatment with Eupatorium perfoliatum, low-dose potencies of 6X and 12X are primarily recommended. In the context of self-medication, the drug is available as homeopathic tablets, drops or globules. Eupatorium perfoliatum can be taken as a single substance or in the form of a complex with other supporting active ingredients.
- Adults: five globules, five drops or one tablet three times a day
- Children: three globules, three drops dissolved in water or half a tablet
- Infants: two globules
- Babies: just one globule or a corresponding number of drops of the homeopathic solution or tablet portions in water
If the symptoms improve, the number of doses can be reduced to two or once a day. Once the symptoms have disappeared, treatment should be discontinued.
In some cases, the administration of higher potencies, for example Eupatorium perfoliatum C 30 or higher, can be useful. In advance, however, a homeopathically trained doctor or experienced homeopath should be consulted.
Key symptoms for the use of Eupatorium perfoliatum
Each remedy in homeopathy is assigned certain key symptoms. These describe the special spectrum of action of the homeopathic medicine. In order to find out which drug is best for which clinical picture, all the main complaints that are observed in the patient are first collated.
The main complaints determined are then compared with the spectrum of action of the corresponding homeopathic medicine. The more and more pronounced the key symptoms of a homeopathic medicinal product are observed in the patient, the more appropriate the chosen remedy is.
- extreme feeling of being beaten up: patient feels like he was “run over by a car”
- exhaustion, feeling weak
- persistent, strong, dry cough with soreness and chest pain
- The patient has to hold his chest in pain when coughing up
- unpleasant feeling of pressure in the eyes
- Hypersensitivity of the skin, even the pressure of clothing is perceived as uncomfortable
- throbbing headache
- runny nose
Eupatorium perfoliatum: Means with a similar effect
The following homeopathic medicines cover a similar range of effects as Eupatorium perfoliatum and can therefore be used as a supplement or as an alternative to treatment:
- Bryonia alba: Bryonia alba acts primarily on the inner skin and is very similar to the Indian feverweed in its areas of application. Byonia is also preferred for the treatment of flu symptoms with fever, stubborn, dry cough, headache, but also joint problems. While Eupatorium perfoliatum patients sweat little and become restless due to the pain, Brynia is characterized by heavy sweating and calm behavior.
- Aconitum napellus: Aconitum napellus is also characterized by highly acute fever and inflammation and severe pain. In addition, blue monkshood is primarily used as a homeopathic shock remedy that is used for acute symptoms caused by fright, shock, stress or an accident.
- Rhus toxicodendron: This drug is mainly used against strains, sprains and lumbago. As with Eupatorium perfoliatum, Rhus toxicodendron is also used for headaches and body aches in the context of a feverish flu.
